Before you take the steps to become an EMT it’s better to know what an EMT is and what it is exactly an EMT does. EMT is an acronym for Emergency medical Technician. EMT’s are trained to provide care to individuals in need of emergency care. There are different levels of EMT’s. EMT basic, EMT intermediate, and you have paramedic level.
To become an EMT you must first find an accredited school and apply for the required curriculum. Formal training and certification is needed in order to become an EMT. Requirements to become an EMT vary from state to state. After you have completed the required hours of classroom instruction, you will have to go before the National registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and take the National registry test to get your national numbers to certify you are a licensed EMT.
Almost all community colleges offer training to become an EMT. There is more involved in training to become and EMT than just classroom training. In most cases you are also required to have a set amount of time in an Emergency room and on an ambulance with patient contact. In classroom settings you will more than likely learn certain skills such as trauma assessments, bleeds, fractures, cardiac and respiratory complications, ACLS, basic life support, and some advanced life support. You will learn to use the equipment necessary to perform your job as an EMT, such as backboards, splints, suction devices, and stretchers to name some of the many pieces of equipment you will utilize in your career as an EMT.
Once you have taken your EMT course and successfully passed it according to the guidelines and standards set forth by your state, you will then need to apply with the National Registry of Emergency Medical technicians (NREMT). After passing all of their criteria in order to get accepted to take the exam, you will go to the designated location and take the exam. After taking the exam and successfully passing it, you will then be issued your national numbers and in most cases will have to register with your state. Most of the 50 states will accept national registry and you can go to work in any of those states and some countries.
