Bronchitis in children usually occurs after a cold and is characterized by a dry cough and typically lasts about 4-6 weeks. If you are a health care professional providing treatment to the pediatric population, consider taking a PALS certification that will increase your knowledge about respiratory emergencies and how to approach these emergency situations and provide a healthier outcome.

Bronchitis is not contagious. Some children will require antibiotics, steroids or neutralizer treatments. To help a child with bronchitis breathe better, you may use a humidifier at night time and keep the child away from cigarette smoke. Provide an atmosphere without any irritants such as perfumes, sprays of any kind or extreme hot or cold temperatures. If at any time a child has any difficulty breathing, call 911 immediately. The paramedics have taken a PALS course and have been certified in providing emergency treatment to the pediatric population.

Today more than ever there are medical shows on television that are actual people that are severely ill, injured and have died. CPR is cardio (heart), pulmonary (lungs), resuscitation (restoring to previous condition). CPR is not just for medical professionals anymore. The medical community would be thrilled to know that people are taking interest in learning this simple life saving technique. A CPR class offers valuable information and instructions on the correct techniques that are needed when a person’s heart has stopped and they are no longer able to breath on their own.

It may be the neighbor across the street, a spouse, a child or infant. No one ever knows what they will be faced with, and the worst thing is an with an emergency where a life is in jeopardy and you are helpless in providing life saving measures until emergency medical assistance arrives. Time is of the essence in an emergency. Consider a CPR class today and make a difference in a person’s life as well as your own.

PEA stands for Pulse less Electrical Activity and is a severe cardiac problem requiring immediate intervention or the patient will die. There are several reasons for this cardiac arrhythmia and the PALS class discuss in depth what they are and what is required of the medical professional to quickly intervene in a timely manner. During this algorithm of PEA/Asystole, always consider causes that can be reversible in order to change this Heart rhythm. Here are some causes to consider with recommended intervention:
* Hypovolemia- fluid boluses
* Hypoxia- re-assess airway and ventilate with high flow O2
* Tension Pneumonia- pleural decompression
* Hypothermia- Warming body with fluids orally or IV and warm blankets
* Hyperkalemia- physician may order Kayexalate to lower the potassium level

Medication used during the PEA/Asystole algorithm for PALS class is:
*Epinephrine-usually given IV, IO or via ET tube if no IV/IO route available

The medical professionals that provide medical treatment to the pediatric population are required to attend a PALS class and become certified. The certification lasts for a period of 2 years. During the PEA algorithm, always re-assess after every intervention to ensure that they are effective and if the appropriate treatment is being provided. Continue CPR for 2 minutes as recommended by the American Heart Association. In the pediatric population, the cardiac problems that are occur are almost always due to respiratory compromise that precipitated the event. Take a good patient history and what led up to the event.

How To Keep Your Child Safe At The Beach

If you plan to make a trip to the beach with your kids, you want to make sure to keep them safe. There are only a few important things to remember in order to keep your children safe at the beach. First, you want to remember to always have adequate sunscreen. Apply the sunscreen to your child before he or she gets wet. And re-apply throughout the day. Second, you want to have age appropriate floating devices. Whether it be a life jacket or arm floats. Third, but not at all the least important, water. You want to make sure that your child stays hydrated. Being outside in the heat can drain you and your child of hydration, fast. So make sure to take plenty of water and have your child drink some at least every 30 to 45 minutes. So, as long as you remember to have these 3 things, your trip to the beach should be safe as well as fun.

For C.diff, ALL health care providers and family members are required to practice the correct hand washing technique, which is 20 seconds of hand washing using antibacterial soap, rinse and dry hands thoroughly and turn the faucet off with a clean paper towel. The Alcohol Gel based hand cleaners are NOT accepted to use for patients with C.diff, the alcohol has no effect on the organism Hand washing reduces the amount of numbers on the hands. Providing great friction rub when washing the hands removes the organisms off, therefore decreasing there numbers. Just know that it is the FRICTION that causes the germs to leave the hands, causing it to be extremely hard to transfer germs from person to person or place to place.

Especially during the flu and cold seasons wash hands frequently. Avoid shaking hands, as this can pass germs from person to persons. Do not share beverages or use the same utensils. Cover the mouth when coughing or sneezing. It is also a good idea to stay away from crowded places during the holiday season. Drink plenty of fluids, and get adequate rest.

ACLS has become the standard for health care providers in the Atlanta Georgia area. JACHO has also instituted the safe practice act in order to protect patients while receiving ACLS level of care. While the Quality Control and Improvement has helped in this transition we still need further guidance from the American Heart Association.

The leading council for the ACLS certification course has always been the American Heart Association. The ACLS standards have survived the test of time even with these changes that have taken place over the past 10 years. We hope to continue to improve on the delivery and implementation of Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

The ACLS course keeps health care professionals up to date on the current recommendations that are approved by the American Heart Association. This course covers how to treat different heart arrhythmia and the medications needed for certain types of situations. The course involves hands-on training and then you are required to pass a written exam as well as a mega-code.

The colleges in and around Atlanta Georgia has noticed a significant increase in submissions. As the need for Emergency Medical Care escalates, there is still time for you to capitalize upon new and innovative education.

As we move into the new millennium, we must all continue to advance the field of Emergency Medical Care. The medical community has even gone so far as to hire potential employees from accredited medical schools. As Paramedics and Doctors advance their skills, the American Heart Association has provided an ACLS Refresher for people to become current with the new standards of Emergency Medical Care.
