Atropine Sulfate

By ford • April 12th, 2010

Atropine Sulfate has been used for years in the PEA algorithm. Although, many paramedics rather give Epinephrine and a fluid bolus instead. The EMS community has yet to realize the benefit of Atropine. I have witnessed the benefits first hand while working an cardiac arrest.

The patient was in a slow rhythm without a pulse. I gave Epinephrine I.V. Push and a 1000 ml of saline with no change. As soon as I gave the patient Atropine, he regained a normal sinus rhythm and a very strong pulse.  Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the AHA has a course near you that you can attend. Be sure to study prior to attending.
